How it started

In 1970, Nancy Hunter-Gray gave a researcher £200 to hold a conference to find out why her grandson, Martin, had died suddenly and inexplicably.

This led to the creation of the charity and, since then, we have invested £12 million and worked with world-leading researchers to find out why babies die and how to prevent it. Research, such as that by Professor Fleming which informed our ‘Back to sleep’ campaign in 1991, has saved over 31,951 babies’ lives.

    Research saves lives. We saw this very clearly when families demanded answers to why their babies had died and fundraised for research, leading to the Back to Sleep Campaign in the 1990s... We cannot become complacent; up to 200 families every year still need answers, and we need research to be able to give those answers to families and to prevent as many deaths as possible.
