Training overview

This training is a vital step in ensuring that all families on the CONI programme receive informed, compassionate, and consistent support. 

It provides essential knowledge and guidance to support bereaved families participating in the CONI programme, equipping professionals with the confidence and understanding needed for this important role.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Refresh and deepen their understanding of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and current safer sleep guidance. 
  • Describe the aims, structure, and key components of the CONI programme. 
  • Confidently explain the programme to families and support them throughout their involvement. 
  • Use CONI tools effectively, including symptom diaries, weight charts, and movement monitors. 
  • Communicate sensitively and supportively with families who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a baby.

Course structure and requirements

The training is structured as a distance learning programme made up of seven core modules: 

  1. SIDS and safer sleep introduction 
  2. What is the CONI programme?
  3. The role of the health professional 
  4. Symptom diary 
  5. Sheffield Weight Chart 
  6. Movement monitors 
  7. Supporting bereaved families 

To successfully complete the course, participants must complete all modules, including associated tasks and the final evaluation form, within 8 weeks. The guided learning time is approximately 12 hours (excluding the buddy visit) for those completing initial training.
