Yesterday, MPs from across Parliament attended the Campaign for Gigi drop-in at Portcullis House to learn more about the urgent changes needed to better protect babies and young children in nursery care.
Hosted by Tom Morrison MP, the drop-in gave MPs the opportunity to hear directly from Gigi’s parents, Katie and John Meehan and from experts at The Lullaby Trust. Prior to the drop-in, Katie and John, Tom Morrison and Jenny Ward, Chief Executive of The Lullaby Trust, also delivered a letter to Downing Street.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who used our template to contact their MP. More than 2,700 emails were sent to over 460 MPs. This led to 65 MPs from five different parties attending the drop in, along with Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, to hear about the Campaign for Gigi first-hand and show their support for improving nursery safety.
Wider coverage of the drop-in hit the press, with coverage from the Manchester Evening News, ITV News, BBC Radio Manchester, Channel 5 and more.
We asked attending MPs to sign a letter to be sent to the Early Years Minister and the Education Minister, which had been written by Katie and John. 70 MPs have now signed this letter. We also encouraged MPs to talk about the Campaign for Gigi on their social media channels, and offered oral questions for them to raise in parliament.
Together, we’ve taken an important step towards ensuring no other family endures the loss Gigi’s family has – ensuring that Gigi’s legacy lives on by protecting children in the places meant to keep them safe.
We are grateful to the MPs who attended and engaged with Gigi’s story, which included the UK’s Early Years Minister, Olivia Bailey and Chair of the UK Parliament’s Education Select Committee, Helen Hayes. Their presence sends a powerful message to Katie and John that lessons learned in Gigi’s name are being heard, and to decision-makers that these changes cannot wait.
Did your MP attend?
This drop-in is a huge stride forward, but it is not the end.
We will continue working with MPs, the Department for Education and the early years sector to help ensure a safer start for every baby and young child.
