The current unexplained infant death rate in the UK for live births.
In 2023, the unexplained infant mortality rate was highest for mothers aged under 20 years, at 1.07 deaths per 1,000 live births. This is almost four times higher than all other age groups.
The peak age for SIDS is 1-2 months, however it’s important that families are encouraged to continue with room-sharing up to six months as 87% of SIDS occur during this period.
Late registrations of deaths have become more prevalent recently. For 2022, late registrations meant that the unexplained infant mortality rate was revised from 0.28 deaths per 1,000 live births to 0.31 deaths per 1,000 live births.
